This is a painting course with designers and Graphic and Interior Design certificate students in mind. The goal will be to sidestep the pressures of traditional realistic representation in favor of employing visual perception tactics, psychology, and strategy in addressing self-expressive goals, context, and audience. Students will study the formal elements of painting - color, shape, composition, illusion of depth, materiality, and dynamism - as methods that both evoke the expectations and history surrounding painting, and to craft and modulate viewer relationships. Students will work in water-based paint, mixed media, and spatial design, and class exercises will be aesthetic puzzles to be solved with critical analysis and group discussion. Previous painting experience is not necessary.
