This course supports students in developing painting and drawing skills while exploring individual interests. Through structured exercises, observational studies, and personal projects, students build a strong foundation and artistic voice. Beginners learn essential concepts and techniques; experienced students deepen skills, experiment, and expand their practice. Core elements include line, composition, color, form, and value, explored through observational, still life, figure, and imaginative assignments. Students use a variety of materials and approaches, both traditional and contemporary. Regular critiques, discussions, and instructor feedback foster critical thinking and growth. Artist presentations, writing exercises, and visits to the Art Institute of Chicago connect studio work to contemporary art practice. While individual exploration is encouraged, the course emphasizes guided skill development and experimentation. Those seeking fully independent projects may prefer Advanced Painting and Drawing Studio.
Note: No previous experience is required. Students are encouraged to bring a digital camera, tablet, and/or laptop for homework/research and after-studio hours projects.
No class July 5th.
