In this course, students are introduced to both concepts and processes utilized in the production of digital 2D animation. Turn your drawings into moving images using compositing, layering, and collaging. Students are encouraged to experiment while building skills in software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and others. Trips to the Art Institute of Chicago and local galleries/studios, artist presentations, and group critiques supplement the studio experience. Taught by Oona Taper.
Student Testimonials:
- I really enjoyed every activity we did and each film we watched; I found meaning and educational value in everything done in class.
- This class was very fun, both in what we were creating and the students in the course. We had a huge range of experience with the medium, from those who had been animating for years, to those who had never animated before, as well as our diverse backgrounds in general, which brought together an interesting mix of processes.
- This was by far my favorite art class I’ve ever taken. I was very worried that I would begin this class and a few days into it learn I hated animating, and never wanted to do it again. Instead, a new love for the medium has been imbued in me, and further strengthened my hopes of becoming a professional animator one day.
- [Oona Taper] was kind, supportive, patient, and funny. It made classroom life really nice. They also explained everything clearly.
*NOTE* Basic drawing and computer experience required. Previous experience in animation or with Adobe Creative Suite is helpful, but not required. SAIC provides computers with the appropriate software, but students are also encouraged to bring their own digital camera, tablet, and/or laptop for homework and after-studio hour projects.
