Comics and Graphic Novels

This course investigates visual storytelling and traditional and digital drawing strategies through the contemporary art forms of comics and graphic novels. Students are introduced to a variety of illustrative approaches, such as writing, storyboarding, penciling, and inking/coloring, as well as multiple methods of presentation in print and online. Building on this foundation, students learn research methods to develop ideas and produce projects that examine narrative structures, material choices, and the integration of text and image. Traditional as well as digital drawing methods are explored to reflect contemporary artistic practices, and may include pencil, pen, ink, Wacom tablets, Adobe Photoshop, and/or Adobe Illustrator. Regular critiques, field trips to the Art Institute of Chicago, and exposure to contemporary artists, illustrators, and designers supplement the studio experience. *Previous drawing experience required.

Students who have completed their sophomore year of high school have the option of enrolling for 1.0 college credit for this course by selecting the "for credit" option below.
